TM-1 System Program (Ver.1.01)


How to tell the version
Please check the version of the system working on your TM-1 before downloading the archive file.

If You're Using a Windows
  1. Use a USB cable to connect the TM-1's USB connector to your computer's USB connector.
  2. Set the [ POWER ] switch on the TM-1 to "USB."
  3. Select [Start] - [Control Panel].
  4. Start [Device Manager].
  5. Open [Sounds, Video and Game Controllers].
  6. Check "V***_TM-1."
    The current version of the TM-1 is displayed in the "***" portion. (In the case of version 1.01, for example, "V101_TM-1" is displayed.)
    If "1.01" or higher is displayed, performing an update is not necessary.
  7. Close "Device Manager."

If You're Using a Mac
  1. Use a USB cable to connect the TM-1's USB connector to your computer's USB connector.
  2. Set the [ POWER ] switch on the TM-1 to "USB."
  3. Go into the [Applications] - [Utilities] folder and start Audio MIDI Setup(.app).
  4. Select [Window] - [Show MIDI Studio] to display "MIDI Studio."
  5. Check "V***_TM-1."
    The current version of the TM-1 is displayed in the "***" portion. (In the case of version 1.01, for example, "V101_TM-1" is displayed.)
    If "1.01" or higher is displayed, performing an update is not necessary.
  6. The procedure to use differs depending on the version of the TM-1.

    If You're Updating the Unit
    Detach the USB cable connecting the TM-1 and the Mac.
    Next, select "V***_TM-1," then after using the method described below to delete "V***_TM-1," quit the AUDIO MIDI settings.
    • With "V***_TM-1" selected, press the [delete] key on the Mac.
    • With "V***_TM-1" selected, select [Edit] - [Delete].
    * The deletion method differs depending on the operating system you're using.

    If No Update Is Needed
    Quit "Audio MIDI Setup."

Bug Fixes
The following bugs were fixed.
  • During the operation in "Saving All Settings of the TM-1 to the Computer (Backup)" in TM-1 Editor, quitting TM-1 Editor or detaching the USB cable can cause some parameters saved on the TM-1 itself to be reset to their default values.
  • Other minor bugs.


What you will need to update your TM-1
  • TM-1
  • USB cable (Dedicated charging cables cannot be used.)
  • A personal computer which can run the following SMF players ("UpdSMF")
    • UpdSMF ( SMF Player for Windows )
    • UpdSMF ( SMF Player for macOS / OS X )


Caution when performing the update
  • As long as you follow the procedure, no error occurs during the update with this program. If you fail the update, you can perform the update again.
  • Never power-off your TM-1 while the update is in progress!
    If a power failure or similar accident occurs during the update process, the TM-1 won’t be able to start up in normal operating mode. This will require servicing, so you will need to contact Roland service center near you if this occurs.
  • We regret that we are unable to answer questions regarding the update procedure using this system program. Please perform the update responsibly, following the directions given in this document.

Getting the update file
Please open/extract the downloaded "tm1_sys_v101.zip" file on your computer to get the update file named "TM1_APP.MID" in the "tm1_sys_v101" folder.


Procedure for the update
Follow the procedure below to install the unarchived system program onto the TM-1.
* Never turn off the power to the TM-1 while the update operation is in progress.

  1. Set the Edit knobs on the TM-1 as indicated below.
  2. Use a USB cable to connect the TM-1's USB connector to your computer's USB connector.
  3. Hold down the [ + ] and [ - ] switches on the TM-1 and move the [ POWER ] switch to "USB."
    "U" flashes on the TM-1's display.
  4. Use a USB cable to connect the TM-1's USB connector to your computer's USB connector.
  5. On the computer, run UpdSMF.
  6. Set MIDI Out Device to the connected V***_TM-1.
    * The current version of the TM-1 is displayed in the "***" portion.
  7. Click [ Path ] (click [ Select... ] for Mac) on "UpdSMF" and specify the location where the update file ( TM1_APP.MID ) is from SMF Path (SMF Folder for Mac). Then, click the [ OK ] button.
  8. Click [ Scan SMF ] (unnecessary for Mac) to check that the update file ( TM1_APP.MID ) is displayed in the file list.
  9. Click Send.
    Sending of the update program starts.
    When "ok" appears on the display, sending of the update file is complete.
  10. When the display indication on the TM-1 changes from flashing to steadily lighted, the update is finished.
  11. Quit UpdSMF on the computer.
  12. Turn the [POWER] switch on the TM-1 to OFF.
  13. Check to make sure the version has been updated.

    If You're Using a Windows
    Please verify the version number "1.01" with the procedure described in "How to tell the version" part of this document.

    If You're Using a Mac
    Even after this update has been carried out, the version information shown in "MIDI Studio" is not updated.
    Follow the procedure below to delete the TM-1 and Mac connection information, then refer to "How to tell the version" and check the version.

    1. Detach the USB cable connecting the TM-1 and the Mac.
    2. Go into the [Applications] - [Utilities] folder and start Audio MIDI Setup(.app).
    3. Select [Window] - [Show MIDI Studio] to display "MIDI Studio."
    4. Select "V***_TM-1," then use one of the methods described below to delete "V***_TM-1."
    • With "V***_TM-1" selected, press the [delete] key on the Mac.
    • With "V***_TM-1" selected, select [Edit] - [Delete].
    5. Next, refer to "How to tell the version" and check the version.
